Sand is an important part of any gardener’s arsenal, especially if you live somewhere with particularly heavy, clay-filled soil. Using this material in your garden also means repurposing waste from the coconut industry that would otherwise go in the trash. You can use coconut coir to supplement heavy clay soils and areas with too much sand.
It’s also important to note that horticultural sand is chosen specifically for its mineral content . Horticultural sand is the go-to medium for supplementing compacted soil. Sand is used to break up and reduce the weight of compacted soil. But if you want to enjoy all of the benefits of supplementing your garden with sand, coarse all-purpose sand is the best option. While plant species that are specially adapted to sandy soil — cacti, succulents, etc. — can survive these conditions, most species cannot.
Perlite
River Sand is a natural sand that is made from weathering or erosion processes, unlike other sands that are made from crushing rock. River Sand can vary in gradation but is typically coarse sand. It is made from the same material of the local rock it eroded from, so usually it is mainly silica sand from quartz. Our River Sand is sub-angular in shape, but other sources can be rounded. Even heavily processed river sand may still contain dust.
River Sand is used in concrete, horse arenas, golf courses, french drains, topdressing, sport field construction, and as a soil amendment. It can be mixed in with the soil or used alone like in a sand-based sport field or french drain. Topdressing a lawn or grass is actually a process in which River Sand levels and amends the turf. Horse arenas use River Sand as a well-draining footing as it provides the horse with cushion and traction at the same time. Pre-cast, ready mix, and other concrete projects can use River Sand for an aggregate and it helps concrete pump and finish better. Gravel works well for me and I’ve used river rocks before.
Can I Use River Sand for Gardening?
They won’t be “washed” like some actual aquarium gravel is though, so be sure to clean it first, otherwise you’ll get some sediment. These products are made specifically for use as soil amendments. The best way to rinse river sand is by placing it in a large bucket or trough. Add water and use a garden hose or other tool to agitate the sand. With that said, river sand isn’t the preferred medium for supplementing garden or potting soil.
It’s easy to think of compost as a dense, heavy material. To the uninitiated, perlite looks and feels a lot like puffed rice. And this description isn’t far off, since perlite is produced by heated and “popping” pieces of volcanic glass.
Can I Use All-Purpose Sand for Plants?
Mulch will not improve your garden soil’s drainage and aeration overnight. Like compost, peat moss is great at retaining moisture without weighing down the soil as a whole. While compost encourages proper drainage, it also retains moisture.
Our sand grains are actually sub-angular in shape, unlike many of the other highly-weathered sources that typically are rounded. The river rocks look good, but are too big for my liking, because excess food falls down in-between where the fish can't get to it. Then you get these huge clumps of detritus collecting across the surface of your tank. These materials offer many of the same benefits as river sand without the potential drawbacks.
When mixed, sand and compost closely resemble traditional potting soil. Yet blindly adding sand to already balanced soil will do far more harm than good. The rough edges of all-purpose sand create small pockets within the soil that allow oxygen and water molecules to collect. They also support the surrounding soil to prevent compaction.
The challenge is finding an ideal balance for your own garden’s needs. One of river sand’s defining traits is its smooth, rounded granules. This quality is a result of the river water eroding the sand particles over time. Sand, whether naturally occurring or mined from a quarry, consists of extremely fine particles of rock and minerals. River sand is just one type of sand you can safely add to your garden soil.
You’ll have to use a gravel vac once a week for cleaning but that’s not too bad, makes water changes easy Imho. This allows the vermiculite to hold onto moisture when needed much like organic soil amendments like compost or peat moss. The perlite will slowly work down into the garden soil and improve drainage and aeration. Also, you should not use river sand collected from a natural source in your garden. I use river rocks, not from home depot but that’s what I use as a gravel. Instead, we recommend opting for a more effective alternative like coarse all-purpose sand, horticultural sand, organic compost, or perlite.
